5th September 2013
The Nikkei 225 index has closed marginally higher today (September 5th), recording its third successive session of gains after the Bank of Japan (BoJ) maintained its monetary stimulus.
Following a two-day policy meeting, the central bank pledged to press on with its plans to inject more than 270 trillion yen into the country's economy over the next two years. This is part of prime minister Shinzo Abe's intentions to end almost two decades of near-constant deflation.
The most recent data emerging from Japan has indicated that Mr Abe's policies - dubbed 'Abenomics' - are performing sufficiently to allow the country's government to press ahead with plans to introduce a hike in sales tax.
Asian stocks were broadly higher overnight, with Hong Kong's Hang Seng index adding 1.15 per cent and Shanghai's Composite index advancing by 0.46 per cent.
Today's global trading session is set to be dominated by central bank policies, with the Bank of England and European Central Bank set to follow the BoJ's lead and make their latest policy announcements later today.
